Mental Health & Wellbeing

Category: Health Information

“Good health isn’t just about food and exercise, it’s also about what you think and feel.”

Your Mental Health & Wellbeing

The past couple of months have impacted people in so many different ways, both positively and negatively. Aside from the obvious and very stressful financial and health implications of COVID19, there are also the more serious mental health concerns that have arisen or worsened during this time.

For some people, this time has been a welcome respite from the hectic pace of our often busy lives, a chance to reconnect with our core family unit and to enjoy some valuable time at home, but for others, the lack of connection and social interaction has brought about, or increased feelings of anxiety, loneliness or despair. Wherever you or your loved ones may fall in this spectrum, it is important to acknowledge that you are not alone in how you feel, and making lifestyle changes or seeking help to protect your mental wellbeing is the most courageous decision you can make.

Helpful changes

Good mental health and wellbeing is the core foundation to our overall health and something we should all be investing more time and effort into. Some positive strategies could be as simple as:
• Making time to walk or exercise.
• Spending time enjoying nature ie: gardening or going to the beach.
• Ensuring you are well hydrated and making healthier food choices.
• Getting enough good quality sleep each night.
• Having better time management and knowing your limits

If you have vulnerable loved ones, friends or neighbours, make sure to regularly check in on them. A simple phone call to ask if they are okay could be the only contact they receive that day. Acts of kindness are extremely rewarding and could be someone else’s lifeline as you don’t know what they are struggling with.

For some however, these strategies may not be quite enough. If you are on medication or under the care of a health professional, make sure to regularly check in with them and that your medications are reviewed and monitored. It is very easy to let things slide when faced with unexpected challenges but your mental health should remain your number one priority.
