What causes Iron Deficiency
Feeling tired all the time is a common complaint, often being excused by the busy lives we lead. But there may be another reason for feeling persistently tired. Iron deficiency is a common cause of tiredness and is particularly common in women.
There are 3 main causes of Iron Deficiency being:
- Not eating enough iron rich foods
- Trouble absorbing iron
- Blood loss
Why Do We Need Iron
Iron is used to make healthy red blood cells which are responsible for transporting oxygen around the body. The body cannot produce iron which means it must come from the foods we eat or from supplements. If the body’s iron stores become depleted its ability to produce enough healthy red blood cells suffers which may result in iron deficiency and/or anaemia.
Symptoms of low iron may include:
- Headaches and mental fogginess
- Reduced exercise tolerance.
Diagnosing and Treating Iron Deficiency
Iron deficiency can be diagnosed by a simple blood test. If you are found to be iron deficient, oral supplements may be an appropriate way to replenish your iron stores. However, many people do not tolerate oral iron due to constipation or tummy upset and in some cases, your doctor may recommend an intravenous iron infusion.

We offer Iron Infusions here at Third Avenue Surgery. They are carried out in our treatment room under nursing supervision and will take approximately 45 minutes. An iron infusion results in immediate correction and you should feel the benefits soon after the procedure.
