Bike Week – 15th-24th March 2019
Bike Week is all about cycling, something many of us only enjoyed in our childhood. In actual fact, bike riding is one of the most versatile and healthy forms of exercise as it’s low impact and suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. It’s not only fun but a great way to relieve stress and enjoy the outdoors. It can also protect you from some serious diseases such as heart attack, stroke, obesity, depression and arthritis.
Cycling is an aerobic activity which means your heart, lungs and blood vessels all get a work out. You can control your intensity and pace until your fitness levels improve. Every effort helps to improve your overall fitness and health.
The health benefits of regular cycling can include:
- Increased cardiovascular fitness
- Muscle strength and flexibility
- Improved joint mobility
- Decreased stress levels
- Improved mental health and wellbeing which can help reduce anxiety and depression
- Improved sleep
- Decreased body fat levels
- Prevention and management of disease

The added environmental benefit of cycling is that it’s emission free. This helps to reduce road traffic, pollution, noise and congestion, all supporting how great it would be to ride instead of drive.
Many of our Doctors enjoy cycling to work and for leisure on the weekends, including Dr Ben (pictured right) who is a serious cyclist!
